The time of the new moon is a magical one.
Each lunar month, the sun and moon align twice within a 29 day period. When the sun and moon are either side of the Earth, this is when the moon’s glorious face is illuminated for us and we have a full moon. When the sun and Earth are either side of the moon, the moon’s face is in shadow and we have a dark moon.
A new moon follows a dark moon, when the first sliver of silver horns are visible. This is a potent time for witchcraft and any magick tied to lunar energy. Whenever the sun, Earth and moon are aligned, there are strong forces at work affecting nature’s rhythms, particularly the tides. The most dramatic tides (spring tides) occur during full and dark moons. Migratory patters of birds and sea life are, also, affected at these times as well as coral reproduction.
When we utilise new moon magick , we’re harnessing the energy of the dark moon and the growing potential of the waxing moon – the moon as it’s getting bigger. This is why the new moon is so useful and popular for witchcraft.
ritual and spell Ideas
You don’t have to plant actual seeds on a new moon (although lunar gardening is a thing) but you can plant the seeds of your endeavours.
The new moon is the beginning of a lunar cycle. When it comes to new projects, the new moon is the best time to start. While many people wait until New Year to make a resolution they won’t keep, witches have (up to) 13 fresh starts throughout the calendar year.
Any spell or ritual aimed at finding a new job or attracting a new love will thrive during the new moon.
Playing the Long Game
New moon magick is in it for the long haul.
The beginning of the lunar month is not for the ‘quick-fix’ approach. The metaphorical seeds we plant now will take time to take root and germinate, at least until the full moon in around 14 days time. Some spells, like money spells, do well to be left to ‘grow’ as long as they’re tended to regularly (such as adding to money bowls on a regular basis).
The most effective moon magick (in my experience) is conducted in 3 stages: ‘planting’ on the new moon, ‘manifesting’ on the full moon and ‘harvesting’ before the dark moon. Stay tuned for posts where I go into more detail about moon phase magick.
Setting Up A Routine
Routines aren’t for everyone. Some practitioners find routines stifling for their craft. Others, like myself, thrive on routine. It provides structure and discipline where there often isn’t any. Without some kind of spiritual routine, I’d probably never get anything done.
If you’re setting up a new spiritual routine for yourself, daily or otherwise, the new moon is the best time to do so. In fact, an effective routine for beginner witches is to align yourself to the lunar cycle. Committing to the new and full moons is a good place to start. You could even set up a lunar altar space where you specifically work with the moon phases.
A lunar altar could include: moon phase altar cards, candles (white for full, black for dark), images of moon deities, moon water, selenite, moonstone.
Consider the Signs
If you’re astrologically inclined, you might want to think about the zodiac sign the new moon is in.
The moon travels through each sign every 2 days or so. When a new moon occurs, it means the sun and moon are conjunct (close together) in the same sign. If it’s a new moon in November and the sun is in Scorpio, then the new moon is in Scorpio, too.
Here is a list of moon signs and their associations:
- ♈︎ Moon in Aries – leadership, willpower, inner child
- ♉︎ Moon in Taurus – growth, fertility, money
- ♊︎ Moon in Gemini – communication, writing, public relations
- ♋︎ Moon in Cancer – family, home, emotional wellbeing
- ♌︎ Moon in Leo – self-love, confidence, creativity
- ♍︎ Moon in Virgo – health, education, healing
- ♎︎ Moon in Libra – glamour, relationships, justice
- ♏︎ Moon in Scorpio – shadow work, sex magick, transformation
- ♐︎ Moon in Sagittarius – travel, legal work, religious study
- ♑︎ Moon in Capricorn – wealth, success, career
- ♒︎ Moon in Aquarius – community, activism, freedom
- ♓︎ Moon in Pisces – dreamwork, spiritual growth, intuition
Examples: If you’re wanting to cast a spell for success in a job interview, you have a couple of options. The moon in Gemini (communication) or Capricorn (career) would work well. For a first date, Leo (confidence) or Libra (relationships) are both possibilities.
The Art of Cleansing
Everybody has heard of ‘spring cleaning’ – the beginning of the solar year is a great time to focus on giving your home a decent scrub. Consider that new moons are like turning a fresh page every month rather than every twelve. Cleansing is the perfect kind of new moon magick to refresh your altar/shrines/tools as well as the rooms of your home.
There are lots of different ways to cleanse:
Smoke cleansing – probably the most popular form of cleansing. You simply burn protective herbs (such as juniper or rosemary) or incense and use the smoke to clear away unwanted energies.
Sound cleansing – using a bell, gong or singing bowl. Music at certain frequencies is thought to work in the same way.
Water cleansing – using consecrated water such as Florida water (American folk), holy water (Christian) or khernips (Hellenic) to cleanse either spaces or people/animals. Khernips is made by burning a fragrant herb (like bay leaf), dropping it into water and declaring “Xerniptosai!” (zer-nip-tos-sai-ee) which means “be purified!”
Salt cleansing – salt is highly protective and absorbent. It can be mixed and used with water (like sea water) and wiped over surfaces or left in bowls in strategic points around your room/home. The idea is that the salt bowls will absorb the unwanted energies over time (Himalayan salt is extra effective due to the added iron). After a while, usually by the next dark moon, you simply dispose of the salt and refill (NOT recommended if you have pets – cats and dogs can become seriously ill from salt poisoning if left unattended).
